John A. Englebrecht

John A. Engelbrecht was a visionary entrepreneur and broadcaster who founded South Central Broadcasting in 1946 and launched WIKY Radio in Evansville, Indiana, in 1947.

He is credited with establishing WIKY as the first FM station in Evansville in 1953, setting a local standard for broadcasting. Engelbrecht’s foresight and innovative approach to media helped shape the future of radio in the region.

John A. Engelbrecht’s journey into broadcasting began with humble beginnings at his family’s apple orchard on the North Side of Evansville. His wife, Bettie, supported his endeavors by teaching at Centennial High School, allowing him to pursue his passion for radio.

In 1946, Engelbrecht founded South Central Broadcasting, marking the start of his successful career in media. Two years later, in 1948, WIKY became a major player in the local radio industry, and by 1953, it was the first FM station in Evansville, operating from the basement of Engelbrecht’s home on Mount Auburn Road.

Engelbrecht’s vision for broadcasting was ahead of its time, as noted by his grandson J.P. Engelbrecht, who described him as a “futurist” who could see the direction media was heading.

This forward-thinking approach helped WIKY become a staple in Evansville’s radio landscape. Engelbrecht’s legacy continued through his family, with his son John D. taking over as President and CEO after his passing in 1974.

Engelbrecht’s contributions to broadcasting were significant, not only in establishing WIKY but also in shaping the broader media landscape in Evansville. His family continues to be involved in the industry, with J.P. Engelbrecht serving as the current CEO of South Central, Inc. At its peak, South Central owned 13 stations when it was privately owned.

Despite the challenges faced by local radio stations over the years, Engelbrecht’s pioneering spirit remains a cornerstone of Evansville’s broadcasting history.
