Don H. Martin

Don Martin was the founder and owner of WSLM Radio in Salem, Indiana. He remained actively involved with the radio from its launch in 1953 until his passing at the age of 90. He also owned the local cable company and Salem Cable Channel 5, making a lasting impact on the region’s broadcasting landscape.

Born in 1920 in Salem, Indiana, Martin attended high school there before going on to graduate from Indiana University. He also served in the Marine Corps during World War II, an experience that he credited with shaping his creativity and determination, which later fueled his innovations in broadcasting.

In 1953, Martin founded WSLM Radio, which became known as a family-run station. His daughter took ownership of the FM station, while he retained control of the AM station. His son, who was an engineer, followed in his father’s footsteps, maintaining the technical side of operations. Their dedication earned WSLM a strong reputation within the Indiana broadcasting community.

Beyond radio, Martin was also passionate about television. He launched an independent station, WFTE, Channel 58, in 1994 in Salem. The next year, the station affiliated with the new UPN network. His deep connection to his hometown helped him establish strong relationships with advertisers and the community.

Martin believed in the enduring value of small-market radio, seeing it as a personalized and essential complement to national media. He dedicated his life to ensuring its longevity, hoping that WSLM would remain in his family for generations to come.

A firm believer in radio’s enduring power, Martin dismissed claims that television would render it obsolete. He saw radio’s ability to spark imagination as an unmatched advantage. He also adapted to industry changes, attending IBA seminars and expanding into cable television in 1972.

Martin left behind a legacy of innovation and commitment to local media. His work shaped Salem’s radio and television landscape, ensuring that his contributions would continue to impact the community for years to come.
